Halden Wofford and the Hi-Beams’ classic style of honky-tonk country and western swing has a language and culture all to itself, but only takes one quick lesson to learn how to love for a lifetime. SLV audiences will again have the chance to take that lesson as the group plays a free concert, this Sun., Aug. 1 at 6pm in Alamosa’s Cole Park, as the finale of the Alamosa Live Music Association’s Sundays@Six 2010 season.

The echoey twang of the steel guitar, snap of the snare drum, thump of the stand-up bass and rippin’ electric guitar solos mix with Wofford’s distinctive vocals to create a solid sound that is familiar yet purely original. Wofford’s growly, wavering tenor rings out across dive bars, theaters, municipal concerts and festivals, conjuring up images of Hank Williams Sr., Buddy Holly and Bob Wills. (more…)

San Luis Valley Big Band

Continuing their mission of spreading the message of swinging jazz and other music genres, the San Luis Valley Big Band performs this Sun., July 25 at 6pm in Alamosa’s Cole Park, as part of the Alamosa Live Music Association’s (ALMA) “Sundays@Six,” series.

A dedicated group of people from all walks of life, the San Luis Valley Big Band is a non-profit community band. Retired music teachers, active music teachers, technology professionals, students and others come together in this rural area of south central Colorado to share their love of music. Their concerts have become a much-anticipated annual tradition as part of “Sundays@Six.” (more…)

Banjo Trailblazer Brings Bluegrass-Jazz Group to Alamosa

Pete Wernick is renowned worldwide for his accomplishments and contributions to bluegrass music: the hot banjo picking force in several trend-setting bands including Hot Rize, respected author and teacher, songwriter, and long-term President of the International Bluegrass Music Association. Now he brings his latest all-star band, Flexigrass, for a free concert in Alamosa, Colo.’s Cole Park, Sun., July 11 at 6pm, as part of the Alamosa Live Music Association (ALMA)’s “Sundays@Six,” series.

“Among the most creative and just plain fun musicians in (blue, new, jazz) grass,” according to “Bluegrass Unlimited,” Wernick, also known as Dr. Banjo, has recorded bluegrass chart-topping hits, conducted instructional camps nationwide and overseas and created bestselling instructional videos and books. Flexigrass follows two other significant Wernick-organized bands: groundbreaking bluegrass instrumental wizards Country Cooking (1970-76), and the internationally acclaimed Hot Rize (full-time 1978-90 and still occasionally performing).
