Please share a story about your work/experience with ALMA

I could share a lot of stories about the incredible concerts ALMA has presented. But instead I want to share my deep admiration for the ALMA Executive Director, our Adams State intern and my fellow board members. They are all energetic and creative. Together we have researched, planned and instituted new initiatives to broaden ALMA’s relevance to our diverse community. Nancy, Autumn, and board members not only “show up.” They care and they drive ALMA to continually enhance its service to our community

Board Member | 2022 – 2025

Where are you originally from and what brought you to the San Luis Valley?

I am originally from Arizona, but I grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. I did not know at the time how fortunate I was to have access to so many concerts at the Aladdin while growing up, including ELO, Earth Wind & Fire, Jethro Tull and Heart, to name a few. Okay I am dating myself for sure, ha! I moved to the SLV in 1992 when my husband took a position at the Great Sand Dunes, and we have loved living here ever since!

How long have you been a part of ALMA, how did you get involved, and what is your current role within ALMA?

I joined the ALMA Board in June 2022 after attending awesome ALMA events for many years! I offered to meet with the Executive Director and the Board and they signed me on as a volunteer, for good or for bad! I try to attend almost all of the board and committee meetings, and I have learned a lot about the music business. With a background in nonprofit accounting, the treasurer position is a good fit for me.

What are you currently excited about regarding ALMA and what project(s) are you a part of?

This summer ALMA will be incorporating a new entertaining way of presenting Sundays at Six concert announcements in English and Spanish in recognition of our diverse population. We will also incorporate dance lessons and performance at three of our Sundays at Six concerts. Stay tuned – This is going to be really exciting!

Why is music important to you? Why do you think it is important for our community?

Music is something we can all share. I think people are seeking inclusion and connectedness among diverse groups, and ways to bridge differences and create common beliefs and norms. I think sharing music concerts can improve relationships and enhance community identity, and combat social isolation.
